Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA)
The Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program of Southern Maryland is a non-profit organization which advocates for the best interests of abused and neglected children. The program recruits and trains volunteers to advocate for the best interests of these children in juvenile court proceedings in St. Mary's County and Charles County. CASA of Southern Maryland operates under the umbrella of the Center for Children which provides comprehensive mental health and advocacy services to children and families. We currently have thirty-five volunteers and serve over fifty children. Our goal is to maintain a roster of sixty active volunteers and serve 100% of the children adjudicated a Child in Need of Assistance (CINA) due to abuse and/or neglect and referred to the CASA program. More Details: Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers provide information to the court for abused and neglected children by thoroughly assessing the child's case and providing facts and recommendations regarding placement and services that are in the child's best interests. Successful candidates are trained in the juvenile court process and laws, social services, advocacy, the dynamics of child abuse and neglect, and child development. If you care about children, can be objective, and have good communication skills, you may be the special person CASA is seeking. Requires 8-15 hours/month time commitment.
