Herbert John Long

Herbert John Long, best know as John or Long John of Valley Lee, Maryland,passed away on December 5,2001 at Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, DC. Mr. Long was born in New York, New York on March 22, 1933 to Herbert Long and Elizabeth Monateck Long.
Mr. Long was married to the late Anna "Nancy" Morse Long. They were married on March 6, 1968 in Arlington, Virginia.
He is survived by his children, Elizabeth Vaughan,Burley WA, Peggy Bertotti,Leesburg GA, Pamela Lowe,Wetumpka AL, Judith Tinsley, Valley Lee MD, Johanna Albert,Hollywood MD, and Michael Long,Valley Lee MD. He was also survived by his sister Dorothy Bodoff, Whitestone, NY. Mr. Long has 14 grandchildren and one great grandson.
Mr. Long graduated from Commerce High School in New York City in 1952. Shortly after graduation he started his Navy career going to boot camp in Bainbridge, Maryland.
He was stationed in many places as all Navy men do, some included: Quonset Point,RI, Norfolk, VA, Bermuda, Jacksonville,FL, Adak,AL, Shimmy Island, Japan, NAS Patuxent River,MD, Rota, Spain, Andrews Air Force Base, MD.
Mr. Long served on many ships during his Navy career, some included were the USS Randolph, Bennington, Intrepid, Essex and Block Island.
He flew over the Mediterranean many times in a PBY searching for submarines. He survived two airplane crashes.
Mr. Long retired as a Petty Officer 1st Class, from the United States Navy in 1977 after 25 years of service to the country he loved so much. He felt it was an honor to be a part of the armed services and did his duty as a son of this great nation.
Mr. Long continued working as an Aircraft Mechanic with Dyncorp at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. He retired from Dyncorp in 1995 after 18 years of service.
Mr. Long spent his retirement with his wife Nancy, his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed gardening, reading, and was an avid Redskin Fan. He was a wonderful and devoted husband, father and grandfather.….He will sorely missed by all…
