Albert "Al" Edward Showalter Jr., 99, of La Plata, MD passed away on June 26, 2016. He was 99 years old. Al was the son of Albert and Marie Showalter of Pittsburgh, PA. He had one brother and two sisters who preceded him in death.

Al was also preceded in death by his oldest son, Albert Showalter, III and his wife of 63 years, Ella Mae Showalter. He is survived by his son, Gary Showalter; daughter-in-law, Coral; and three grandchildren, Allison, Stacy and Daniel Showalter.

Al served as a radio operator in the US Army in World War II where he was stationed in Germany and France. Following the war, he was employed by the Naval Research Laboratory until his retirement. Al became a magician as a young boy, and he could often be found around town doing magic tricks.

A Viewing will be held on June 30th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Arehart-Echols Funeral Home, 211 St. Mary's Ave., La Plata, MD. A Funeral Mass will be held on July 1st at 10:00 AM at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 201 St. Mary's Ave., La Plata, MD. Interment to follow at the St. Mary's Newport Catholic Church.
