Maxine Wood Spence, 72, of Mechanicsville, MD passed away surrounded by her loving family on October 17, 2016 in her home. Born on August 15, 1944 in Leonardtown, MD she was the daughter of the late Elizabeth Stevens Wood and James LeRoy Wood. Maxine was the loving wife of Robert "Harry" Spence, whom she married on September 7, 1964 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Mechanicsville, MD.

In addition to her husband, Maxine is survived by her children: Craig Spence of Mechanicsville, MD, Kristie Norris (Sean) of Mechanicsville, MD, Andrea Spence of Mechanicsville, MD, 6 grandchildren: Ryan, Megan and Kaylee Spence, Courtney, Garrett and Aiden Norris. Siblings: Marvin Wood of Mechanicsville, MD, Glenn Wood of Mechanicsville, MD.

She was preceded in death by her siblings: Weldon Wood and Eddie Wood. She was a lifelong resident of St. Mary's County, MD and graduated from Margaret Brent H.S. in 1962. Maxine was self-employed in the family business for over 30 years. Maxine enjoyed: antiquing for her antique shop, traveling, volunteering her time for local organizations, and spending time with family and friends.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 20, 2016 from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM with prayers recited at 7:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, P.A. Leonardtown, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, October 21, 2016 at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph's Catholic Church Morganza, MD with Father Andrew Royals officiating. Interment will follow in Queen of Peace Catholic Cemetery Helen, MD.

Pallbearers will be: Ryan Spence, Garrett Norris, Aiden Norris, Sean Norris, Russ Lemmon, Rick Wood and Jon Spence. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Glenn Wood, Freddie Burris, Donald Thompson, Jerry Turner, and Roy Spalding. Contributions may be made to St. Mary's Nursing Home 21585 Peabody Street Leonardtown, MD 20650 and Hospice of St. Mary's P.O. Box 625 Leonardtown, MD 20650.
