On Friday, February 10, 2017, James Calvert Johnson peacefully departed this life at Genesis Health Care Center in La Plata, Maryland after a short illness, to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

James, lovingly known by many as Tootsie, was born, October 25, 1924 in White Plains, Maryland to the late William and Jennie Johnson. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Marie Johnson, three children, Peggy, Carolyn and James Johnson Jr.; one sister, Agnes Hawkins; and one brother, Francis Johnson.

James was educated in the Charles County Public School System and after attending the 7th grade, he ended school to work the fields with his father and brother on Padgett's Farm. At an early age, James was employed at the Naval Ordnance Station in Indian Head, Maryland working at the Fire Department, before enlisting in the United States Army where he fought in World War II and was later Honorably discharged on March 5, 1946 at the rank of Sergeant.

After returning home from the Army, James was employed with the Maryland State Road for a few years, before returning to work at the Naval Ordnance Station until he decided to retire after 38 years of service. James, being one who could never keep still, decided to return to the workforce where he obtained a job working for Alpha Security at Berretta USA in Accokeek, Maryland for 5 years.

In his spare time, James enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing cards with his cousins until the wee hours of the morning and taking his sons fishing. James had a craft and loved building picnic tables, but his greatest joy was his grandchildren, who affectionately called him Pop Pop. James was a wonderful father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many.

He leaves to cherish his memory, Sons; Clifford L. and Kevin L. Johnson, a devoted daughter-in-law; Sheila (Vickie) Johnson; grandchildren: Keanon and Kandace Johnson and Kevon Green-Johnson; one sister Jeanette Campbell; two sisters-in-law Ann Jones (Lenwood) and Shirley Gilmore; one brother-in-law David Hawkins; special friend Gladys Watts. Also, left to cherish his passing is a host of nieces, nephews, other devoted family and friends.
