Mary Ellen DeVaughn Berry, 80, of Owings, MD passed away on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at Calvert Health Medical Center in Prince Frederick, MD surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of Emory E. "Gene" Berry, Sr., devoted mother of James Christopher Berry and Emory E. Berry, Jr. (Sandy).

Mary was born at Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C. in 1940 and grew up in Upper Marlboro, MD. Mary worked at Giant Food in Lanham, MD, where she met her husband to be, Gene Berry. They married on April 13, 1962. After she left Giant, Mary worked for the Prince Georges County School System as an aide on a special needs school bus. In 1996 Mary retired from the County to help take care of her ailing mother. In 2001 Mary and Gene moved from Prince Georges County to Calvert County, MD, where she resided until her passing.

Mary is survived by her husband Emory E. "Gene" Berry, Sr., of Owings, MD and her sons James Christopher Berry of Upper Marlboro, MD and Emory E. Berry, Jr. (Sandy) of St. Mary's County, MD. Two grandchildren; Jake Berry (Amanda) of Baltimore, MD and Justine Lenza (Anthony) of Calvert County, MD. One great-grandson Levi Lee Joseph Lenza of Calvert County, MD and (thought of as a daughter) Debra Kaufman of Upper Marlboro, MD.

The family will receive friends at Lee Funeral Home Calvert, 8200 Jennifer Lane, Owings, MD 20736 on Friday, January 15, 2021 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM where remembrances and tributes will be shared at 6:30 PM. Interment will be private.
