Martha had a fruitful career as director of food services for the Charles County Nursing Home for 30 years. She retired on July 1, 2005. She also worked at the County Drug Store for 19 years and Shorty Michael's Restaurant.

She loved to cook and that was evident with her host of family members that would gather at her kitchen table on Sundays for her fried chicken. Her kids would grab a piece before she could even finish a pan full. She would tell Jolita now go out and get another pack of chicken. She also loved playing PoKeNo, cards, catering, music and loved to dance, holiday crafts and planting flowers in her front yard. Martha was a fun loving person and would do anything for anyone. Martha loved her family.

In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by three sisters Sallie Bivins, Sarah Russell, and Wesie Herd; brothers Henry, William and Ralph; and two sister-in-laws Mary and Shirley Thomas.

Survived by her husband Joseph "Joe" Thomas; her three caring and loving children Jolita Moton, Joseph (Diane) Thomas, Jr., and Dewayne (Renee) Thomas; two grandchildren Jokisha and Melvin (whom she thought the world of); and eight great grandchildren; her devoted sister Delores (John) Brawner; and brothers John (Grace) Bivins, Leroy (Rosetta) Johnson, Jerome Johnson, Thomas (Pauline) Johnson, and John (Irene) Bond.
