Charles County Commissioners Seek Applicants for Board, Commission Vacancies

LA PLATA, MD * The Charles County Commissioners are seeking Charles County residents to fill vacancies on the following boards and commissions: the Area Council on Aging, the Board of Social Services, the Commission for Women, the Disability Review Board * Sheriff's Disability Pension Plan, the Heritage Commission, the Homeowners Dispute Resolution Board, the Human Services Partnership, and the Tri-County Youth Services Bureau.

There is one vacancy on the 17-member Area Council on Aging (ACA) for a resident age 60 and older to serve a four-year term from July 1, 2006-June 30, 2010. The ACA meets in La Plata on the second Thursday of each month at 9:30 a.m. The ACA provides input and reviews and comments on the final draft for the Area Aging Plan, and advises the County Commissioners on problems, needs, and concerns of the County's senior citizens.

There are two vacancies on the nine-member Board of Social Services, which meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Department of Social Services in La Plata. The Board of Social Services deals with policies, programs, and problems at the Department and the Public Assistance Administration. The terms are for four years which begin July 1, 2006, and end June 30, 2010.

The Commission for Women has one vacancy to fill an unexpired four-year term, which ends on December 31, 2007. The Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month at the County Government Building in La Plata.

There is a vacancy to fill an unexpired four-year term on the Disability Review Board for the Sheriff's Disability Pension Plan for a doctor/general practitioner. The term ends December 31, 2009. The Board meets as needed to accept and review applications in accordance with the Sheriff Disability Pension Plan and determine the extent of the disability and benefit payment.

The nine-member Heritage Commission has a vacancy to fill an unexpired four-year term that ends December 31, 2007. The Commission meets as needed at the Southern Maryland Studies Center at the College of Southern Maryland, La Plata, to manage, procure, preserve and disseminate materials relating to Charles County history.

There is a vacancy to fill an unexpired three-year term on the seven-member Homeowners Association Dispute Resolution Board. The vacancy is for a representative who lives in a common ownership community. The term ends December 31, 2007. The Board meets as needed to hear and resolve disputes between a homeowners association and a homeowner regarding the covenants or restrictions of the homeowners' association.

The Human Services Partnership has a vacancy for a citizen representative to fill a three-year term from September 1, 2006,- August 31, 2009. This 15-member board, with eight public sector and seven private sector members, meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 2:30 p.m. at the Human Services Partnership offices in La Plata.

Lastly, there are four vacancies on the Tri-County Youth Services Bureau for three-year terms from July 1, 2006-June 30, 2009. The Bureau assists troubled youth prior to contact with the law enforcement agencies. Meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of every other month. Vacancies can include, but are not limited to, residents with law enforcement, social services, health department, and educational backgrounds, as well as interested citizens.

Applications for all boards will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, June 23, 2006.
