Board of Commissioners Seeks Volunteers For Boards, Committees and Commissions

The Board of Commissioners for St. Mary's County is seeking citizens who are interested in volunteering their time in public service to the community by serving on various Boards, Committees, and Commissions. Interested citizens can pick-up an application in the St. Mary's County Public Information Office, located on the first floor of the Governmental Center in Leonardtown or call 301-475-4200 extension 1341. Applications and meeting dates and times can be found on the County's website at http://www.co.saint-marys.md.us/voluntr/. All applications must include a resume. To be considered for appointments effective July 1, 2007, applications must be submitted by Friday, June 1, 2007.
The following Boards, Committees and Commissions have existing and potential vacancies:

Commission for Women
(one member can be reappointed)
To deal with matters involving the concerns of and issues affecting women such as employment, education, health, public office, home, and legal rights.

Commission on Aging

(two members can be reappointed and one member cannot be reappointed)
To advise and assist in the coordination of governmental programs involving the aging and deal with matters of finance, social services, housing, employment, leisure time, medical services, transportation and retirement as it affects senior citizens.

Commission on the Environment

To promote environmental awareness by research, by information gathering, and by public meetings; to involve citizens through a variety of means to affect improved community understanding; to serve as county government's official representation in matters related to the environment. As such, to serve as liaison with Federal, State and other Local Governments and with civic organizations and the general public.

Ethics Commission

(two members can be reappointed)
To be the advisory body responsible for interpreting the St. Mary's County Public Ethics Ordinance and advise persons subject to it as to its application; to be responsible for hearing and deciding any complaint filed regarding an alleged violation of the Ordinance; to be the custodian of all statements, registrations, reports, and complaints submitted in accordance with the Ordinance; and to be responsible for conducting information and education programs regarding the purpose and implementation of the Ordinance.

Historic Preservation Commission

(one member can be reappointed)
To assist in the identification and designation of historic districts within St. Mary's County in accordance with the St. Mary's County Zoning Ordinance.

Housing Authority Board

(three members can be reappointed)
To assist in the acquisition, lease and operation of housing projects and programs in the county and to investigate the living conditions and the means of improving such conditions.

Human Relations Commission

(three members can be reappointed)
To encourage and insure equal treatment to all, without regard to race, color, religion, ethical or moral conviction, national origin, sex, age, or handicap, in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws or regulations in the areas of housing, employment, and public access.

Marcey House Board

To oversee the business and manage the day to day operations of the Marcey House, which is a residential facility for the treatment and counseling of persons recovering from substance abuse.

Metropolitan Commission

(one member can be reappointed)
To provide the Commission with a wide range of authority necessary for the operations of the public water and sewer system within the County.

Nursing Center Governance Board

(two members can be reappointed)
The Board must govern and oversee the operations of the St. Mary's County Nursing Center and supervise the Administrator.

Plumbing Board

(two members can be reappointed)
To execute or to cause to be executed all the provisions of the St. Mary's County Plumbing Code.

Social Services Board

(one member can be reappointed)
To deal with policy, programs and problems of the local Department of Social Services and Public Assistance Administration.

Solid Waste Advisory Committee

To review legislative requirements, demographic and geographic data, and the existing solid waste system; to critique current system; to analyze alternatives to provide service; to review ten year plan and develop suggestions; to participate in the recycling planning process; to assist in the public educational process for the implementation of recycling in St. Mary's County; to present periodic reports to the Board of County Commissioners; and to perform other activities as needed.

St. Mary's Interagency Children's Council
(three members can be reappointed)

To provide for interagency collaboration for children's services in St. Mary's County to coordinate services and maximize resources in developing programs; and to support programs which provide prevention and intervention services to children and their families; and to examine programs and services and plans for children and youth in St. Mary's County for the purpose of identifying duplications, inefficiencies, effectiveness of programs, resources, and unmet needs; and to secure and analyze departmental plans and budget requests affecting programs.

Tri-County Aninal Shelter Advisory Board
(one member can be reappointed)

To give advice to the Boards of Commissioners relative to the service rendered by the Tri-County Animal Shelter to the citizens of Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's.

Wicomico River Commission

To advise the County on the stewardship of the Wicomico River Watershed and to further the aims of the Scenic and Wild Rivers Act and to serve as an advocate for the wise use and management of the Wicomico River Zekiah Swamp and their resources.
