Event: All-You-Can-Sing Chantey Night
Location: Evans Seafood Restaurant
Time: 6 PM Duration: 04:00 hours
Author: Evans Restaurant and River Creek Lodge
Sea Music Comes to Evans Seafood RestaurantWhether you can sing all 286 verses to “Drunken Sailor” or can barely stumble through a hearty “yo ho ho ho” you can join in the fray when Evans Seafood Restaurant and local fans of maritime music offer up a special evening of sea music plus an all-you-can-eat buffet featuring regional cuisine overlooking the Potomac River.
“This is sea music at its best,” says organizer Janie Meneely, who performs songs of the Chesapeake Bay with her partner Paul DiBlasi. “It’s like organic karaoke; everyone can join in, but there are no bouncing balls to follow, and no microphones.”
As she explains it, diners partake of the lavish buffet (a spread that will include crabs, oysters and stuffed ham, says Evans’s chef Britany Hayden), then at 8 p.m. sharp, Meneely and DiBlasi rise and begin to sing a familiar sea chantey, one that anyone can sing along on. “It can be something as simple as ‘What Do You Do with a Drunken Sailor’ or ‘South Australia’ or ‘Blow the Man Down,’ ” says Meneely. After that, she and DiBlasi will invite each table to lead a song, request a song, or simply toast the event. “No one has to sing,” she insists, “but it’s hard to resist joining in when everyone else is.” Once the music has made it once around the room, “we just start all over again,” says Meneely, who adds, “At ten p.m. the stalwarts will decamp to the bar and just keep on going.”
As members of Ship’s Company Chanteymen, Meneely and DiBlasi have led chantey sings all over the state, including regularly scheduled monthly chantey sings in Washington, Annapolis and Baltimore. This will be their first visit to St. Mary’s County.
“Last January the Calvert Marine Museum hosted a chantey sing for their First Friday program,” says Meneely. “It was pretty well attended, so we thought we’d come back for more, only this time we headed farther south.”
Meneely and DiBlasi perform together as Calico Jack, specializing in songs that celebrate the history, legends and traditions of the Chesapeake Bay watermen. “What better place for us to share our music than right here on the banks of the Potomac, close to where the river meets the Bay. And what better for those who love sea chanteys to come and sing about maritime traditions in general. What’s more, we’re right next door to the River Creek Lodge, so no one has to drive home!”
