La Plata High School Class Donates $557 To Teen Court

The students in John Childers' La Plata High School government class recently donated $557 to the Charles County Sheriff's Office's Teen Court program. They presented Capt. Michael Wyant and Teen Court Coordinator Maryellen Kraese with a check June 14.

Mackenzie Arnold, a student in the class and a youth attorney who volunteers for Teen Court, gave a presentation to her class about the Teen Court program, which gives first-time youth offenders an opportunity to take responsibility for their misdemeanor offenses without incurring a criminal record. Her presentation prompted her class to collect the money to donate to Teen Court. The money will be used to start a scholarship program Teen Court will provide to its volunteers.

"I want to thank the La Plata High School students who donated the money to Teen Court and Mr. Childers' for making the donation possible," said Charles County Sheriff Frederick E. Davis. " It is very refreshing to see students making a positive contribution to our community, not just by donating money, but by setting a goal and achieving it."
