ST MARY’S CITY, Md. (Nov. 30, 2007) – The Buildings and Grounds Subcommittee of the St. Mary's College of Maryland (SMCM) Board of Trustees this afternoon voted to recommend to the full board that the controversial boathouse not be moved.

Robert Waldschmitt of Solomons made the motion which was quickly seconded by John J. McAllister of Leonardtown. The vote was unanimous.

The motion was amended to recommend that the college undertake efforts to trim the trees and growth along the route 5 corridor through St. Mary’s City to improve the view of the watershed for passersby.

The subcommittee also voted in favor of recommending the establishment of a Capital Design Advisory Committee to provide a mechanism for public input for capital projects. The proposal is a direct result of the boathouse controversy.

Again, Robert Waldschmitt of Solomons made the motion which was quickly seconded by John J. McAllister of Leonardtown. The vote was unanimous.

The full Board of Trustees will meet Saturday at 11 a.m. at which time they will vote on both measures.

Based on the tone of the meeting, we expect that the trustees will vote not to move the boathouse.

The meeting took place in the Campus Center and lasted approximately one hour.

A full report on today’s meeting will be filed this weekend.
