LEONARDTOWN, Md. (Dec. 20, 2007) -- The new Arsenic Mitigation Well for the St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission (MetCom) was officially opened on Dec. 6 by Frank Taylor, Chairman of the Board for MetCom and Jack Russell, President, Board of County Commissioners.

The new well is located in the St. Mary’s County Industrial Park off Airport View Drive and is connected to the Patapsco Aquifer. The old well, which was connected to the Aquia Aquifer, contained some arsenic contamination.

“The new well will guarantee that MetCom customers are receiving water that meets the newly established standards set by the federal government,” said Taylor in a statement. “The previous levels of arsenic resulted from the well’s contact with marine sediments.”

MetCom’s mission is to construct, operate and maintain public water supply and public waste water conveyance and treatment systems in a manner that is sustainable, reliable, economical and safe for the environment, customers, employees and the citizens of St. Mary's County. MetCom is governed by a board of Commissioners consisting of seven voting members, and one non voting member. Voting members represent Election Districts and are appointed by the Board of County Commissioners to serve three year staggered terms.

Board meetings are open to the public and are held on the second Thursday of every month at 1:00 PM at St. Mary's County Metropolitan Commission located at 43990 Commerce Ave, Hollywood, Maryland, 20636. The meetings are taped and re-aired on Metrocast Cable Channel 95.
