LEONARDTOWN, Md. (Nov. 11, 2008) -- The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Division of Accountability and Assessment office released the preliminary High School Assessment (HSA) passing results for seniors in the class of 2009.

St. Mary's County Public School (SMCPS) officials are pleased to report that of the 983 seniors who have taken all four High School Assessments, 933 or 94.9 percent have met the state requirement by either passing all four (4) HSA exams or by achieving the combined score option of 1602 or higher. When looking at the entire senior class of 1040 students, 89.7 percent have met the Maryland HSA graduation requirement. Fifty-seven seniors, or 5.5 percent will be sitting for an HSA exam for the first time this year.

"I am pleased with the fact that we have such a high percentage of seniors who have met the HSA graduation requirement," said Dr. Michael J. Martirano, superintendent of schools. "Although it is wonderful that the vast majority of our seniors have met the necessary HSA graduation standard, we cannot be content with our present status. Each of us must continue to do everything we can to ensure that the remaining students are given every advantage to meet this graduation requirement."

"We have put additional supports in each of our high schools to ensure that students are fully prepared to successfully complete the HSA requirements," stated Ms. Linda Dudderar, chief academic officer. "We know who the students are who have not successfully completed the HSA requirements and we are working closely with each of these students to provide a plan of assistance. Each of these students is being given additional support through their respective high schools to ensure that they are properly prepared to complete this state requirement."

For the students who have not met the HSA graduation requirement, there are still three (3) more HSA test administrations for this school term in which they can participate. In addition, there is the MSDE Bridge Plan for Academic Validation option that students can pursue in lieu of passing one or more HSA exams.

Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) results for high schools will not be released by the MSDE Division of Accountability and Assessment office until later in the fall.
