Charles County High Schools to Host Regional Road Shows


LA PLATA, Md. (Oct. 5, 2009)—Charles County Public Schools is hosting Road Show information sessions this fall for parents and community members. Sessions are scheduled by high school regional locations, and include middle and elementary schools. The following is a list of dates, locations and times for each Road Show.

Henry E. Lackey High School’s Road Show is 6 – 8 p.m., Oct. 6 at the school. Schools also participating include Gale-Bailey, Indian Head, Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy and J.C. Parks elementary schools, and General Smallwood and Matthew Henson middle schools.

Possible topics covered include parental involvement, mathematics: prekindergarten to calculus, communication tools for parents, STEM programs (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), reading literacy and the AVID program (Advancement via Individual Determination).

La Plata High School’s Road Show is 6 – 8 p.m., Oct. 14 at the school. Other participating schools include Dr. Thomas L. Higdon, Mary H. Matula, Walter J. Mitchell and Dr. James Craik elementary schools, and Milton M. Somers and Piccowaxen middle schools.

Possible topics covered include technology – web resources, school communication, building partnerships for success, ACT/SAT test information and school safety.

Thomas Stone High School’s Road Show is 6:30 – 8 p.m., Oct. 21 at the school. Schools also participating include Dr. Samuel A. Mudd, Malcolm, J.P. Ryon, T.C. Martin and Mary B. Neal elementary schools, and John Hanson Middle School.

Possible topics covered include tips for reading with children at home, helping children learn mathematics, how sports and academics go together, a parent’s role in course selection, bullying, understanding assessments and communication tools for parents.

Maurice J. McDonough High School’s Road Show is 6 – 8 p.m., Oct. 26 at Eva Turner Elementary School in Waldorf. Participating schools are McDonough, Turner and Dr. Gustavus Brown Elementary School and Benjamin Stoddert Middle School.

Topics covered include understanding testing and assessments, advocating for children and accelerated programs, success strategies and parent communication tools.

North Point High School’s Road Show is 5 – 7 p.m., Oct. 29 at the school. Other participating schools include William A. Diggs, William B. Wade and Arthur Middleton elementary schools and Theodore G. Davis Middle School.

Topics covered include mathematics activities, web-based resources, summer learning opportunities, homework and study skill management, preparing for middle school, understanding college entrance exams and state assessments and the Scholars program.

Westlake High School’s Road Show is 5:30 – 8 p.m., Nov. 12 at the school. Other participating schools include C. Paul Barnhart, Berry and Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer elementary schools and Mattawoman Middle School.

Possible topics covered include understanding assessment tests, early childhood education readiness, preparing students for rigorous classes, online resources for students, developmental changes at the middle-school level, communication access and school safety.

Door prizes will be handed out and dinner, or light refreshments, will be served at each Road Show, and babysitting services for children ages 3 and older will be provided free-of-charge. For more information, call 301-934-7245 or your child’s school.
