Posted on OFFICERS APPREHEND THEFT SUSPECTS: On Nov. 4 at 2:07 p.m., Charles County Sheriff's officers responded to Home Depot at 12050 Jefferson Farm Place in Waldorf for the report of a theft in progress. When officers arrived, store employees advised two men had just stolen rolls of copper wire and fled in a vehicle. Officers canvassed the area and located the car near Western Parkway. As the officers initiated a traffic stop, the suspects fled to the dead end of Hornbean Court where they jumped out of the car. Officers apprehended the passenger, Justin Travis Hurley, 21, of Port Republic, and charged him with theft. Officers are continuing their investigation to identify the driver. All of the stolen property was recovered. Officer D. Walker is investigating. TEENAGED STUDENT CHARGED WITH ASSAULT: On Nov. 4, Charles County Sheriff's officers charged a 17-year-old male in connection with an assault that occurred Oct. 21 in the parking lot of North Point High School. Investigation revealed the teen was asked to exit his bus after he refused to follow the bus driver's orders to sit down. As the teen exited, he punched the driver several times. School administrators, who were in the area, stopped the assault and the driver was treated for injuries to his face. The teen was charged with second-degree assault, disorderly conduct and obstructing a school bus driver. Officer Cusmano made the arrest. STOLEN VEHICLE RECOVERED: On Nov. 2 at 9:22 p.m., officers initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of Post Office Road and Route 5 in Waldorf after observing a traffic violation. The driver of the vehicle refused to stop. Officers pursued the vehicle and performed a PIT maneuver, disabling the car. The suspect attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended a short distance away. A computer check revealed the car had been reported stolen in August. The suspect, Ricardo Delonte Broughton, 35, of Suitland, was charged with unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, theft, and numerous traffic violations. Officer Gross is continuing the investigation. UPDATE ON AGENCY-INVOLVED SHOOTING: The Charles County Sheriff's Office has identified three officers who were involved in an incident that led to a shooting on Oct. 2 in Pisgah. The officers, PFC. Stephen Miller, 39, a three-year veteran, PFC. Eric Leukhardt, 35, an eleven-year veteran, and Cpl. John Freeman, 36, a ten-year veteran, are on administrative leave in accordance with Agency policy. Although the autopsy results are not final, the investigation has revealed that two of the three officers discharged their firearms and a total of eleven shots were fired. The investigation is on-going. |
