PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. – November 12, 2009 - The Calvert County Department of Public Safety is making sand and sandbags available to help county residents in low-lying areas prepare for potential coastal flooding.

The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood warning for coastal areas of Calvert County. Tides are expected to run up to one foot higher than normal during high tide on Friday, November 13.

Calvert County residents in low-lying areas should be alert to rising water and take appropriate action. Residents may pick up sandbags at the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department located at 4030 Old Towne Road, Huntingtown, Md., and at the St. Leonard Volunteer Fire Department located at 200 Calvert Beach Road, St. Leonard, Md.

Sand is available at the Calvert County highway maintenance facility salt dome at 335 Stafford Road, Barstow, Md. prior to the Barstow Customer Convenience Center; the highway maintenance salt dome adjacent to the Mt. Hope Customer Convenience Center at 96 Pushaw Station Road, Sunderland, Md.; the Solomons Volunteer Fire Department at 13150 H.G. Trueman Road, Solomons, Md.; and the St. Leonard Volunteer Fire Department. Residents may pick up sand and sandbags from these sites at any time. Sand will also be at the Appeal Municipal Landfill at 401 Sweetwater Road, Lusby, Md., beginning at 6 a.m. Friday, Nov. 13.

The Calvert County Department of Public Safety is also prepared to open shelters if residents are displaced as a result of flooding. Residents with questions about this weather-related event may call 410-535-0314 or 410-535-0396 at any time. Residents should call 911 only in emergency situations.
