Holiday Closings for Local Government, CSM


SOUTHERN MARYLAND (Dec. 15, 2009)—Local governments have announced the following closings and modified schedules for the coming Christmas and New Years holidays.

CHARLES COUNTY

The offices of Charles County Government and the Tri-County Animal Shelter in Hughesville will be closed Friday, December 25, in observance of the Christmas holiday, and Friday, January 1 in observance of the New Year’s Day holiday.

Also, as part of the Charles County Government cost savings plan, the administrative offices of Charles County Government and the Tri-County Animal Shelter will be closed on Thursday, December 24 and Thursday, December 31. Emergency operations and essential services will remain in force.

The Charles County Landfill, Recycling Center, and Composting Facility on Billingsley Road East, Waldorf, and the Pisgah Recycling Center, off Route 425 in Pisgah, will be closed on Friday, December 25, and Friday, January 1.

The curbside recycling collection and weekly yard waste collection service schedule will be adjusted as follows: Friday “B” will have curbside collection service on Saturday, December 26, and Friday “A” will have curbside collection service on Saturday, January 2.

ST. MARY'S COUNTY

The Board of County Commissioners for St. Mary's County has announced that County Offices will be closed for business on Thursday, December 24 in an effort to save energy and to provide employees additional time to spend with their families. Offices will also be closed on Friday, December 25. All County offices will reopen on Monday, December 28 for normal business hours. All county offices will also be closed on Friday, January 1, New Years Day.

St. Mary's Bus Transit (STS) will operate all weekday routes until 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 24 and run its regular schedule on December 26. There will be no STS service on December 25 or January 1.

The St. Andrews Landfill and six (6) Convenience Centers will be closed on Thursday, December 24, Friday, December 25 and Friday, Jan. 1 in observance of the Christmas holidays and New Years Day, respectively. The landfill and convenience centers will be open normal business hours on December 26, December 31, and January 2. Please call the St. Mary's County Department of Public Works and Transportation at (301) 863-8400 if you need additional information about the landfill, convenience centers, or the STS bus service.

Residents are encouraged to bring their undecorated trees to the landfill and convenience centers following the holiday season. At the close of the 2008/2009 holiday season, the County collected nearly 25 tons of Christmas trees at the Convenience Centers. The trees are ground into mulch and used by the Department of Public Works and Transportation and the Department of Recreation and Parks to maintain county property. Mulch will also be free to citizens while supplies last.

All three libraries will be closed Thursday, December 24 through Sunday, December 27. They will close at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 31 and reopen on Saturday, January 2.

St. Mary's County Senior Activity Centers will be closed and there will be no Meals on Wheels Delivery on Thursday, December 24, Friday, December 25 and Friday, January 1.

The St. Mary's County Health Department, a state agency, will be closed Thursday, December 24 and Thursday, December 31 as part of the state-mandated Service Reduction Days. The Health Department will also be closed on Friday, December 25 and Friday, January 1 for the holidays.

COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN MARYLAND (CSM)

The last day of classes for the College of Southern Maryland’s Fall 2009 semester and Mini-session II is Monday, Dec. 21. The college closes at 3 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 23 through Sunday, Jan. 3 in observance of the winter holidays. The college will resume its normal schedule Monday, Jan. 4.

During this time access to the college’s online services, including registration, remains available at www.csmd.edu through my.CSMD services. Classes begin for Spring 2010 semester and Minisession I on Tuesday, Jan. 19.
