North Point Career, Technology Students Advance to State Competition


LA PLATA, Md. (Feb. 25, 2009)—More than 20 North Point High School students placed in the regional Skills USA competition held Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Calvert Career Center in Calvert County. They will compete at the state level competition March 20-21 in Baltimore.

The Skills USA/VICA regional competition is a showcase event for career and technology students in the tri-county area. The students compete locally and continue through the state and national levels. The philosophy of the competition is to reward student for excellence, to involve industry in directly evaluating student performance and to train students for employer needs.

The students who placed in the competition include:

-- James Curtin, senior, third place, Auto Refinishing (paint);

-- Heaven Manley, senior, third place, Cabinetmaking;

-- Derek Carey, senior, second place, Cisco - Internetworking;

-- Justin Bottorf, junior, first place, Collision Repair (body);

-- Mike Strickland, senior, second place, Collision Repair (body);

-- Andre Dupree, senior, third place, Collision Repair (body);

-- Brittany Adams, senior, second place, Cosmetology;

-- Davia Low, junior, third place, Cosmetology;

-- Andrea Duckett, senior, second place, Criminal Justice;

-- Will Tomlinson, junior, first place, Culinary Arts;

-- Matt Lorman, junior, second place, Culinary Arts;

-- Brandy Hall, senior, third place, Culinary Arts;

-- Brian Keys, junior, second place, Firefighting, Maurice J. McDonough High School;

-- Abby Vandegrift, senior, first place, Preschool Teaching;

-- Ariana Ruff, junior, third place, Preschool Teaching;

-- Jesus Duran, junior, second place, Residential Wiring;

-- Tom Belle, junior, third place, Residential Wiring; and

-- Danny Dempsey, junior; Darryl Icenhower, junior; Mark Bonds, sophomore; and Marc Watkins, junior; Teamworks.

An additional 20 North Point students who were unable to compete at the regional level due to the lack of competition within the region will also complete at the state competition.

North Point, located in Waldorf, is a comprehensive high school that offers science, technology and industry courses in addition to the core curriculum for students.
