PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. (March 31, 2009) -- Police in Calvert County this afternoon issued a warning about a burglary scheme that has been occurring in the Northwestern portion of the county in recent weeks.

The suspects are believed to be African American males who knock on the door of a potential target residence. If someone answers, the suspect(s) ask for someone who obviously does not live at the residence and apologize for the disturbance. The suspect(s) then move on to the next location. When the suspect(s) find a residence where no one answers the door, they force their way in by breaking a window or through an unlocked door and steal items from within.

Police are advising citizens who receive a visit from anyone at their residence who fits this description and does not have a legitimate reason for being at the home, or see any suspicious vehicles or people, to call 911 and tell the dispatcher that "this is not an emergency," but you would like to report a suspicious person.

Police are also cautioning citizens not to confront or challenge anyone they encounter. Instead, police suggest citizens try to obtain a tag number, vehicle description, clothing description, or any other information that may be of assistance in locating and identifying potential suspects.

Police ask if you have information regarding the crimes that does not require immediate law enforcement attention, please contact Lieutenant Steven Jones at 410-535-1600 ext. 2462.
