Escapee Arrested in West Virginia


LEONARDTOWN, Md. (May 12, 2010) - The St. Mary's County Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) today released the following incident and arrest report. BCI is an investigative team comprised of detectives from the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office and the Maryland State Police, Leonardtown Barrack. The unit was established on July 1, 2003 and is based in Leonardtown.

VIRGINIA: On March 29, Inmate Michael Thomas Collins, of Mechanicsville, walked away from the Anchor Program located in Charlotte Hall. Collins was serving two consecutive eighteen month sentences for a second degree assault conviction. Detectives from BCI assumed the investigation. An arrest warrant was immediately issued for Collins charging him with 2nd Degree Escape. On May 7, information was received from an anonymous source indicating Collins was currently residing in Hampshire County, West Virginia. West Virginia State Police were contacted and on May 8 Collins was arrested in Romney, West Virginia without incident. Collins is currently incarcerated in West Virginia pending extradition back to St. Mary's County.
