THEFTS FROM AUTOS AND DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY: The Charles County Sheriffs Office is urging residents to remove personal property from unattended vehicles and to report suspicious activity immediately after officers responded to several calls for thefts and vandalisms. On July 6 between midnight and 5 a.m., unknown suspects broke into several cars parked on Robin Road, Andrea Lane, Farm Drive and Steven Lane in La Plata and stole small electronic devices. Officers processed the scene and located a witness who reported seeing a small pickup truck leaving the scene at about the same time a car alarm sounded. Also, sometime between 11 p.m. on July 4 - until 5 a.m. on July 5, unknown suspects broke out the windows of three cars in the King's Grant neighborhood. Nothing was reported stolen in those cases. MAN CHARGED WITH RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT: On July 5 at 1:33 a.m., officers responded to the railroad bridge above the intersection of Glen Albin Road and Patuxent Court in La Plata for the report of several suspects launching bottle rockets at vehicles traveling on Glen Albin Road. Upon arrival, officers observed two men in the process of setting off another bottle rocket. The officers approached the men but they fled on foot. After a brief foot pursuit, one of the suspects was apprehended. Aladean Bakeer, 20, of La Plata, was charged with malicious destruction of property, reckless endangerment, and trespassing on CSX railway property.
MOTORCYCLE CRASH: On July 3 at 11:58 p.m., officers responded to the intersection of Western Parkway at Plaza Drive in Waldorf for the repot of a motorcycle crash. A preliminary investigation revealed the operator, 39, of Waldorf, lost control of his motorcycle and crashed on the roadway. He was flown to a hospital where he was admitted with life-threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing.
PATROL OFFICERS ARREST WOMAN IN CONNECTION WITH THEFT AND FIRST-DEGREE ASSAULT: On July 3 at 10:40 a.m., officers responded to Safeway in Bryans Road for the report of a theft. According to an employee, Tamika Darnita Myers, 24, of Washington, D.C., entered the store and placed two containers of crabmeat in her purse. As she exited the store, an employee tried to stop her but Myers went to her car. The employee followed and as Myers pulled out of the parking space, she struck the employee's leg. A lookout was broadcast and responding officers canvassed the area. Myers was located at a nearby shopping center where she was placed under arrest. She was charged with theft and first-degree assault. The employee was not seriously injured. Officer Walden is investigating.
DUI CHECKPOINT: On July 2, officers conducted a DUI checkpoint on St. Charles Parkway near Gallery Place in Waldorf. The operation resulted in two DUI arrests, 17 citations, 11 warnings, 3 safety equipment repair orders, 1 alcohol citation (underage possession), and a recovered handgun.
OFFICERS LOCATE AND ARREST THEFT SUSPECTS: On July 1 at 7:12 p.m., officers responded to Target in La Plata for the report of a theft that just occurred. According to store employees, the suspects stole clothes and fled the store in a car. A lookout was broadcast and officers located the vehicle - which was unoccupied- at the La Plata Wal-Mart. Officers waited for the occupants to return to the car at which point both suspects were found to be in possession of stolen clothes from Wal-Mart and Target. Officers recovered the stolen clothing and arrested the suspects. Krystal Marie Jones, 24, and Gabriel Allena Belton, 23, both of S.E. Washington, D.C., were charged with theft. Officer Figgins investigated.
MAN STRUCK BY TRAIN: On July 1 at 7:49 p.m., officers responded to the railroad tracks between Kent Avenue and Charles Street in La Plata for the report of an injured man. A preliminary investigation revealed a male, 24, was lying on the railroad tracks when he was struck by a train. The victim was transported to a hospital where he was admitted with serious injuries. Investigators are looking in to the possibility that alcohol was a contributing factor with the pedestrian. The investigation is ongoing.
