OFFICER APPREHENDS SHOPLIFTING SUSPECT/STOLEN MERCHANDISE RETURNED TO STORE: On July 14 at 8:45 p.m., officers responded to Kohl's on Mall Circle for a theft in progress. Employees reported a man entered the store and concealed several pairs of shoes in his back pack. Officers observed the suspect running across the parking lot and apprehended him after a brief foot pursuit. The suspect resisted arrest but was eventually subdued. Officers recovered the bag and found three pairs of Nike shoes inside. The suspect was transported to the Charles County Detention Center where he provided a false name and date of birth. A check of the suspect's fingerprints revealed his true identity as James Tovar Slade, 43, of Fort Washington. A computer check also revealed Slade had an open warrant in Alexandria, Virginia. A 17-year-old female was taken into custody but she was not charged. The investigation began after patrol officers noted suspicious activity at the house.
