Charles County Sheriff's Office to Host Baseball Camp

"Badges for Baseball" Includes Free Instruction from Blue Crabs Players at Regency Furniture Stadium, August 13 & 14

LA PLATA, Md. (July 16, 2010)—Hey Kids! Charles County Sheriff Rex W. Coffey wants you and 99 of your friends to join him and officers from the Sheriff's Office School Resource Unit as they pair up with Blue Crabs baseball players on Friday, August 13 & Saturday, August 14 at the Regency Furniture Stadium for the Badges for Baseball program sponsored by the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation. The program is FREE and limited to 100 youth players from ages 10-14 who reside in Charles County.

The camp will feature lots of exciting events including baseball instruction from Blue Crabs players, character building and mentoring with the Charles County Sheriff's Office, a break in the PNC Kids Park complete with a rock climbing wall, rides on the Crabby Cove bumper boats pond, an autograph session, a "Badges for Baseball" Blue Crabs t-shirt, and breakfast and lunch both days.

"This is a chance for Charles County youth to experience baseball like never before," said Sheriff Coffey, adding, "It's a great opportunity for children to receive free baseball instruction from the pros, character building from local officers, and the chance to play on the field at Regency Furniture Stadium."

"Here at the Blue Crabs, we are always looking for ways to keep our stadium busy other than when the team is on the field," said Candace Gick, Director of Sales in the team's front office, and one of the organizers of the event. "We are quite proud to be working with the Sheriff's Office to host this camp, and hope the campers can take advantage of this access to our players," Gick continued.

The Sheriff's Office and the Blue Crabs are able to present this event for free thanks to the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, which is funding the two-day event. "We are very appreciative that we are able to host this event and we especially thank the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation and the Blue Crabs for their generosity," said Sgt. Mike Vaughn, a supervisor in the Charles County Sheriff's Office School Resource Unit. "We just hope for a good turnout and that everyone has fun. Learning from our own professionals is a great opportunity."

In addition to the events, all camp attendees will receive complimentary tickets to the Blue Crabs game against the Long Island Ducks on August 14 at 6:35 p.m., which will also include a two-hour buffet catered by Texas Roadhouse of La Plata. Friends and family of the campers may also purchase buffet tickets to the Texas Roadhouse Corral for that night's game at the group rate of $29.00 apiece.

The camp will run from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. both days. Parents of players MUST RSVP in advance in order to assure their child a spot in the camp. To RSVP, please visit the Blue Crabs official website at http://www.SOMDBlueCrabs.com to download the official registration form. Forms may then be returned to the Blue Crabs Front Office at Regency Furniture Stadium, located at 11765 St. Linus Drive in Waldorf.
