PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. (September 8, 2010) -- Calvert County government staff is working to prepare water quality plans for the county’s 22 creek subwatersheds as part of the county’s Comprehensive Plan. These plans will help the county achieve water quality objectives which include “fishable/swimmable” goals for all its waterways. The public is invited to a meeting on the Mill Creek subwatershed on Tuesday, September 21, 7-9 p.m. at the Southern Community Center in Lusby.

Stakeholders will have an opportunity to discuss the effects of living near Mill Creek, which stretches from Solomons Island north to Lake Lariat in Lusby’s Chesapeake Ranch Estates. The meeting will feature a review of the current health of Mill Creek as determined by the county’s grant-funded water testing process. Residents can also learn about water and land usage patterns that impact the sedimentation of waterways and nutrient loading from stormwater runoff. Addressing these issues will ultimately help improve water quality in the Patuxent River and the Chesapeake Bay.

The Mill Creek subwatershed boundary includes large portions of the Drum Point and the Chesapeake Ranch Estates neighborhoods along with all of Solomons Island and the U.S. Naval Recreation Center. Public meetings have already been held on the Hall Creek, Parkers Creek and Grays Creek subwatershed plans.

Those interested may call 410-535-2348 to RSVP for the meeting. A presentation on the subwatershed planning process is available at http://www.co.cal.md.us/assets/Planning_Zoning/Slideshows/SubwatershedPlanning-Dec15-2009.pdf.
