Police Investigating Vehicle Arson, Mailbox Bomb

CALIFORNIA, Md. (November 8, 2010)—Maryland fire marshals are investigating a bomb that destroyed a mailbox in Calvert County and an arson that destroyed a stolen vehicle in St. Mary's County over the weekend.

Police say unknown persons constructed and used an improvised explosive device to destroy a metal mailbox and its contents located in the 2000 block of Horace Ward Road in Owings. The exact time of detonation is not known, but police believe it occurred between Thursday, November 4, and Sunday, November 7.

The damages are estimated at $50.

Deputy Fire Marshal Caryn Moreland investigated. The Calvert County Sheriff's Office assisted.

Police say unknown persons stole a 1996 Ford Explorer during the morning hours on Tuesday, November 2, and set fire to the passenger compartment around 3:30 am on Saturday. The vehicle was found burning on Exploration Park Drive in Lexington Park. The vehicle was completely destroyed due to the fire.

The vehicle is owned by Scott M. Bernich. Damages are estimated at $1,800.

Six firefighters from Bay District VFD responded to the scene, along with deputies from the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office. Deputy Fire Marshal Caryn Moreland investigated.
