Chas. Co. County Students Participate in Winter Chess Tournament


LA PLATA, Md. (February 2, 2011) — More than 100 students competed in the Charles County Public Schools annual Winter Chess Tournament held Jan. 29 at Westlake High School. The tournament, sponsored by the school system’s gifted education and instruction departments, is open to any county resident in grades kindergarten through 12.

The tournament follows a Swiss-style format in which each student plays four games. Students competed in five grade-level divisions and trophies were awarded to first- and second-place winners. Other students received medals for placing in their division. Board of Education member Michael Lukas helped to award trophies, medals and certificates during the awards ceremony.

The following students were winners in their division:

Grades kindergarten through second:

— Muhammad Ramamni, first place, Arthur Middleton Elementary School, second grade;

— Ryan Gandee, second place, Dr. Thomas L. Higdon Elementary School, second grade;

— Joseph Papagno, third place, Walter J. Mitchell Elementary School, second grade; and

— Jeffrey “Reece” Leonard, fourth place, Higdon, second grade.

Grades three and four:

— James Tabourne, first place, Eva Turner Elementary School, fourth grade;

— Peter Stewart, second place, Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy Elementary School, fourth grade;

— Ali Ramamni, third place, Middleton, third grade;

— Christopher Rand-Crawford, fourth place, T.C. Martin Elementary School, third grade;

— Jarrett Mulloy, fifth place, Higdon, fourth grade;

— Christopher Morse, sixth place, William A. Diggs Elementary School, third grade;

— Jonathan Heng, seventh place, William B. Wade Elementary School, fourth grade;

— Adolf Accad, eighth place, Wade, fourth grade;

— Sterling Moorehead, ninth place, Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy, fourth grade;

— Joshua Sokol, tenth place, Wade, fourth grade;

— Rebecca Craig, eleventh place, Martin, fourth grade;

— Jacob Waddell, twelfth place, Mary B. Neal Elementary School, third grade; and

— Braydon McElroy, thirteenth place, Diggs, third grade.

Grades five and six:

— Noah McElroy, first place, Theodore G. Davis Middle School, sixth grade;

— Joshua Leginze, second place, Davis, sixth grade;

— Kyle Batchelor, third place, Gale-Bailey Elementary School, fifth grade;

— Brandon Rodriguez-Theodore, fourth place, Malcolm Elementary School, fifth grade;

— Luke Vandegrift, fifth place, Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy, fifth grade;

— Devion Gilbert, sixth place, Mattawoman Middle School, sixth grade;

— James Wash III, seventh place, Davis, sixth grade;

— Kevin Rohrbaugh, eighth place, Diggs, fifth grade;

— Kathryn Tonucci, ninth place, Davis, sixth grade;

— Luke Roberts, tenth place, John Hanson Middle School, sixth grade; and

Grades seven and eight:

— Franklin Olmsted, first place, Milton M. Somers Middle School, seventh grade;

— Alexander Catterton, second place, Benjamin Stoddert Middle School, seventh grade;

— Matthew Kamin, third place, Piccowaxen Middle School, eighth grade; and

— Nathaniel Thompson, tie for third place, Stoddert, eighth grade.

Grades nine through twelve:

— Alexander Armstrong, first place, Thomas Stone High School, junior; and

— Austin Newhart, second place, La Plata High School, sophomore.
