Charles Co. Household Hazardous Waste Site to be Relocated

Collection Service to Begin on April 2

LA PLATA, Md. (March 13, 2011) — As of Saturday, April 2, the Charles County household hazardous waste collection site will be relocated from the recycling center at the landfill on Billingsley Road to the parking lot of the Department of Public Works building, located at 10430 Audie Lane, off of Radio Station Road in La Plata.

All other information for household hazardous waste collection services remains the same. Household hazardous waste is collected on the first Saturday of each month from April through December from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Household hazardous waste collection is a contracted service and items cannot be accepted when the contractor is not on site.

Items accepted free of charge include: pesticides, herbicides, fertilizer, gasoline, motor oil, anti-freeze, paint, cleaning supplies, pool chemicals, batteries, expired prescription drugs, fluorescent lights, and other poisons found in the home. Materials should be kept in their original containers whenever possible, and bring the containers to the collection site in cardboard boxes to ease unloading.

Officials ask citizens are not to dispose of latex paint as hazardous waste. Solidified latex paint (air dry; add kitty litter, saw dust, or shredded paper) can be disposed of in the trash or taken to our landfill.

To find out various sites throughout the County where oil and anti-freeze are accepted regularly, or for more information on household hazardous waste collection, call the Charles County Department of Public Works, Environmental Resources Division at 301-932-3599 or 301-870-2778.
