Suspected Military Ordnance Discovered in Bay Near Dameron


CALIFORNIA, Md. (July 1, 2011)—A boater discovered a suspected piece of military ordnance Thursday morning in the Chesapeake Bay, near the shoreline at St. Jerome's Creek Beach in Dameron. It was report to the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office and the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Bomb Squad who responded to the scene.

After investigation of the suspected ordnance, it was determined that the item was not an explosive and posed no threat to the area or it's residents, according to the Fire Marshal's office. The item was determined to belong to the U.S. military, who was notified and will assume responsibility for its proper disposal.

The Ridge Volunteer Fire Department, the Fort Belvoir EOD Unit, and the U.S. Navy assisted.
