Local Government Schedule Changes for Thanksgiving Holiday


CALIFORNIA, Md. (November 22, 2011)—Local governments and governmental entities have announced schedule changes for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.

College of Southern Maryland

The College of Southern Maryland will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 23 through Sunday, Nov. 27 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. The college will resume its normal schedule Monday, Nov. 28.

Access to online services, including registration, is available at www.csmd.edu through my.CSMD services.

Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA)

All MVA Offices will be open for regular business on Monday, November 21, through Wednesday, November 23, the day before Thanksgiving.

MVA will close its full-service and express offices on Thursday, November 24, in observance of Thanksgiving Day. All Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP) stations will also be closed. All MVA and VEIP stations will be closed on Friday, November 25, in compliance with the statewide budget reduction plan. In addition, MVA and VEIP stations will also be closed on Saturday, November 26. MVA and VEIP stations will reopen and routine operations will resume on Monday, November 29.

Customers are advised that the days before and after a holiday are especially busy, and they are encouraged to complete their MVA transaction online. Many MVA transactions can be completed from anywhere via the Internet (www.mva.maryland.gov) with eMVA.

Customers can also complete transactions via the MVA Interactive Voice Response Phone System by calling 1-888-834-7344. This system can handle the renewal of a vehicle registration and the payment of an Administrative Flag Fee.

Calvert County Government

All Calvert County government offices will be closed Thursday and Friday, November 24 and 25, in observance of Thanksgiving.

The Calvert Pines, Southern Pines and North Beach senior centers will be closed November 24 and 25. Meals on Wheels will not be delivered on November 24 but will be delivered on November 25.

All Calvert Library locations will be open until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 23 and will be closed on November 24 and 25. Libraries will be open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, November 26.

There will be no public transportation services November 24-25. Regular Saturday service will resume November 26.

All Solid Waste facilities will be closed on November 24 and will open Friday, November 25 for regular business.

Charles County Government

The offices of Charles County Government and the Tri-County Animal Shelter in Hughesville will be closed on Thursday, November 24, and Friday, November 25, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. The Charles County Landfill and Composting Facility off Billingsley Road in Waldorf, and the Pisgah Recycling Center on Route 425 in Pisgah will be closed on Thursday, November 24, only.

Every-other-week curbside recycling "blue bin" collection service will be affected by the holiday. There will be no pick-ups on Thursday, November 24. Those on the Thursday "B" Week Schedule will have their recyclables picked up on Friday, November 25. Those on the Friday "B" Week Schedule will have their recyclables picked up on Saturday, November 26. Monday and Tuesday "B" Week service will not be affected.

Weekly yard waste curbside collection will also be affected by the holiday. Those with Thursday collection service will have their yard waste picked up on Friday, November 25. Those with Friday collection service will have their yard waste picked up on Saturday, November 26. Monday and Tuesday service will not be affected. There will be no VanGO service on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 24. Regular, full VanGO service will resume on Friday, November 25. For more information on VanGO transit service, call the Department of Community Services, Transportation Division, at 301-934-9305 or 301-870-3388.

The Crain Memorial Welcome Center will be closed on Thursday, November 24, and will re-open for normal business hours, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., on Friday, November 25. The Crain Memorial Welcome Center is located at 12480 Crain Highway in Newburg. Call 301-259-2500 to contact the Welcome Center.

St. Mary's County Government

All St. Mary's County Government Offices will be closed Thursday, November 24 and Friday, November 25, in observance of the Thanksgiving Holiday. County offices will re-open Monday, November 28.

The St. Andrews Landfill, six Convenience Centers and St. Mary's Transit System (STS) will be closed Thursday, November 24, and will be open normal business hours prior to and after the observed holiday.

All three St. Mary's County Public Library branches will close at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 23, and will be closed all day Thursday, November 24. The libraries will re-open Friday, November 25 for normal business hours.

All Senior Activity Centers will be closed Thursday, November 25 and Friday, November 26 with no Meals on Wheels Delivery. Their normal schedule will resume Monday, November 28.
