LA PLATA, Md. -- Fifteen Charles County Public Schools middle school students received Ruth Ann Hall Champion Scholar Awards from the Education Association of Charles County (EACC) during a recognition ceremony held May 8 at the Board of Education’s monthly meeting.

The following students received the award:

-- Rachel Chambers, eighth grade, Milton M. Somers Middle School;

-- Mikayla Cox, seventh grade, Somers;

-- Katelyn Kluh, sixth grade, Somers;

-- Paul Adams, eighth grade, Matthew Henson Middle School;

-- Mackenzie Chapman, eighth grade, Piccowaxen Middle School;

-- Evan Griffin, sixth grade, Piccowaxen;

-- Christopher Brown, eighth grade, John Hanson Middle School;

-- Oluchukwu Usoh, eighth grade, General Smallwood Middle School;

-- Jacob Dobry, seventh grade, Smallwood;

-- Ford Boswell, sixth grade, Smallwood;

-- Katelyn Hartmann, eighth grade, Benjamin Stoddert Middle School;

-- Leilani Mason, sixth grade, Stoddert;

-- Jonathan Jones, eighth grade, Mattawoman Middle School;

-- Yanni Gardner, seventh grade, Mattawoman; and

-- Joseph McNair, sixth grade, Mattawoman.

The award winners are selected by an EACC committee from a pool of student nominees. The students were nominated for the award by teachers from their school for their dedication to academics, improvement and positive behavior.

The award was established by the EACC as a memorial to Ruth Ann Hall, who had a 20-year career as a teacher in Charles County. Hall, a former EACC president, was a recipient of the Washington Post’s Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher of the Year award in 1986, when she was a teacher at Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy Elementary School. Additionally, Hall also taught at Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer Elementary School and Mattawoman Middle School.

The EACC established the annual award specifically for middle school students because Mattawoman was Hall’s last teaching assignment.
