Board of Education Meeting on July 23

The Board of Education of St. Mary's County will be meeting under Maryland Local Government Code Article, Section 9-512(a)1,2,6,10 on Thursday, July 23, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. in the Board of Education Meeting Room, 23160 Moakley Street, in Leonardtown. Lunch and Learn 2015 Summer Programs

St. Mary's County Public Schools and the St. Mary's County Judy Center Partnership are hosting FREE summer Lunch and Learn programs for children ages birth - 18. Children's meals are free; adult meals may be purchased for $3.50.

The programs will take place Monday - Thursday, June 29, 2015 - July 30, 2015. The programs are being held at two locations: Lexington Park Elementary School (from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) and G.W. Carver Elementary School (from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.).

Meals are provided by the USDA Summer Meals Program. For additional information, call the Judy Center at 301-863-4068.

Administrative Appointments Announced

Interim Superintendent of Schools, Mr. J. Scott Smith, announces the administrative appointments made by the Board of Education at its meeting of June 10.

Mr. Scott Szczerbiak has been appointed Principal of Park Hall Elementary School. Mr. Szczerbiak joined St. Mary's County Public Schools in 2003 as a Special Education teacher at Lexington Park Elementary School. He has also served as a Compliance Resource Teacher in the Department of Special Education before moving to Spring Ridge Middle School as an Assistant Principal in 2010. Scott earned his Master's degree from Towson University and his Bachelor's degree from State University at Buffalo.

Ms. Jennifer Consalvo has been appointed as Assistant Principal of Spring Ridge Middle School. Ms. Consalvo joined St. Mary's County Public Schools in 2005 as a middle school Science teacher at Leonardtown Middle School. Since 2013, she has been the STEM Coordinator in the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Professional Development. Jennifer earned her Master's degree from Towson University and her Bachelor's degree from Salisbury University.

Dr. Jessica Western has been appointed as the Assistant Principal at Lettie Marshall Dent Elementary School. Dr. Western joined St. Mary's County Public Schools in 2013 as the Certification Coordinator in the Department of Human Resources. Dr. Western began her career in Calvert County Public Schools in 2003 as a middle school teacher and also served as the Core Lead for English, a Learning Specialist, Dean of Students, and Acting Vice Principal with Calvert County Public Schools. Jessica earned her Doctorate of Education from The George Washington University, and both her Master's and Bachelor's degrees from University of Maryland, College Park.

Ms. Emily Tex has been appointed as the School Psychologist (11 month) in the Department of Student Services. Ms. Tex joined St. Mary's County Public Schools in 2007 as a School Psychologist (10 month). She also completed her internship with St. Mary's County Public Schools throughout the 2006-2007 school year. Emily earned her Master's degree from James Madison University and her Bachelor's degree from Washington College.

The Board also appointed Ms. Ashley Beisel as the School Psychologist (10 month) in the Department of Student Services. Ms. Beisel completed her internship with St. Mary's County Public Schools throughout the 2014-2015 school year. Ashley earned her Master's degree from Bowie State University and her Bachelor's degree from Mount St. Mary's University.

The Board of Education approved the transfer of Ms. Katherine Norton from Park Hall Elementary School to Assistant Principal III at Chopticon High School. The Board also approved the transfer of Ms. Susan Ballinger from Lettie Marshall Dent Elementary to Assistant Principal I at Leonardtown Elementary.

The Board approved the title change from Executive Director of Teaching, Learning, and Professional Development to Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Jeffrey Maher will conclude his term as Acting Assistant Superintendent of Instruction on June 30, 2015 and will resume his former duties under the new title.

These appointments become effective July 1, 2015.
