LA PLATA, Md. (April 13, 2016)—Police just advised that James Elek Maples, 10, of Waldorf, passed away Tuesday as a result of injuries he sustained after being struck by a car on April 10 in the 2700 block of McDaniel Road in Waldorf.

Maples was riding his bicycle in a marked crosswalk when he was struck by a Nissan Altima. Police say the crosswalk was clearly marked by road notification markings and street signs at the time of the accident.

Maples was transported to Children's Hospital with critical injuries.

Maples was wearing a helmet and was in the company of his mother and two friends when he was struck. The driver of the vehicle, a 28-year-old woman, remained on the scene. The driver's name has not been released to the public.
