Health Share of St. Mary's

What is Health Share of St. Mary's?

Health Share is a non-profit program which identifies low income individuals and families who cannot afford medical care.

Health Share seeks to provide health care at a very minimal cost to those who are eligible.

Health Share provides:

  • Physician Care
  • Subsidized Prescription
  • Diagnostic Services
  • Hospital Sliding Scale Payments
  • Advocacy

Health Share assures that the cost of services provided is tailored to the individual circumstance of each patient.

Health Share is a joint effort of local St. Mary's County Physicians, St. Mary's Hospital. St. Mary's County Health Department, and St. Mary's County Department of Social Services.

Who is Eligible?

Health Share is meant to serve those people who cannot afford the full cost of medical services, but do not qualify for Medical Assistance in general. Our goal is to serve those above the Medical Assistance level but below the Federal Poverty Level.

For a family of four, this means a monthly income from $500 up to $1.944. Eligibility will be determined by the St. Mary's County Department of Social Services. Recipients will be recertified every three months.

If you feel you or someone you know may be eligible for this program, contact:

St. Mary's Department of Social Services
Carter Building
Governmental Center
Leonardtown, MD 20650
Telephone: 301-475-4759

Health Share Physicians

Eligible individuals and families are expected to have a family doctor. If there is not a family doctor, referrals will be made to physicians who have agreed to accept them. Further referral for specialty care will be made by the primary care physician.

A clinic is held twice a week for those individuals who do not have a physician.

Medications

Pharmacy services are limited. For certain medications, the patient will be expected to pay a 50%, co-payment. For other medications, the patient will pay only the cost of the drug to the pharmacist.

Information on comparable yet less-expensive medications is distributed to physicians.
