Rotary Club of Lexington Park

A Message from the President

The Rotary Club of St. Mary's (Lexington Park) Welcomes You to the Mother County of Maryland. We are very proud of our rich tradition in history as well as our diverse economic base. This guide was designed to provide the newcomer, visitor, and resident with a comprehensive source of information about the county.

Our traditional economy, based on agriculture and the harvests of the bay, has rapidly been surpassed in recent decades by technology based business centered around our largest employer, the Patuxent Naval Air Station. Over the next few years, we anticipate further growth in the businesses that support the base as the County becomes the primary home for all Naval aviation acquisition, research development, end test and evaluation.

This guide is a service our club has been performing for 20 years free of charge. We believe it provides the newcomer or visitor an excellent overview of the services, attractions, and employment opportunities in the 'Mother County of Maryland."

Our rapidly changing and expanding economy has brought with it many new challenges and opportunities to serve the community. Rotary is the oldest world-wide service organization, celebrating 90 years of service in 1995. Our charter is based on the three primary themes - integrity, community service, and world peace. Our membership includes business and community leaders interested in serving the community and networking with other local business leaders of high ethical standards for membership in our club.

This guide and the Annual Oyster Festival are two primary fund raising events of our club. The proceeds of these activities are returned to the local community in the form of scholarships to college end trade school bound students and contributions to numerous charities. Our club members are all volunteers that donate their time and creative energies to these activities. We are always looking for new members interested in sharing the work and rewards of giving something back to the community.

In addition, this year we are establishing a Rotaract Club that is targeted toward young professionals and business people. Rotaract members support our fund raising and community service projects such as this guide and the Annual Oyster Festival. The Rotaract Club will also develop their own projects and events in the local area.

If either Rotary or Rotaract are of interest to you, I can promise you an excellent opportunity for fulfilling community service and fellowship. Anyone interested in learning more about Rotary or Rotaract may call our membership chair, Ms. Paai Willenborg at (301) 862-1900 or me at (301) 862-5538.

I hope each of you has the opportunity to enjoy the Oyster Festival and National Oyster Shucking Competition, which is held annually on the third weekend in October. At this and other County attractions, I'm sure you will find St. Mary's County as hospitable as it is beautiful - enjoy, and please support our sponsors that make this guide available to you.
