St. Mary's Schools Announces Several Appointments


LEONARDTOWN, Md. - The Superintendent of Schools for St. Mary's County this week announced several administrative appointments which were made by the Board of Education at its meeting of May 9, 2007.

The Board appointed Ms. Elizabeth Servello to the position of principal at Greenview Knolls Elementary School. Prior to this appointment, Ms. Servello served as assistant principal at the school. Since joining the school system in 1980 as a classroom teacher at Oakville Elementary, Ms. Servello's experience also includes serving as a counselor at Hollywood Elementary. She earned her Master's degree in guidance and counseling from Bowie State University, and her Bachelor's degree in elementary education from Ashland University in Ashland, OH.

The Board named Ms. Susan Fowler principal of Lexington Park Elementary School. Ms. Fowler, who is currently the principal of Jenifer Elementary School in Charles County, previously served as an assistant principal at Benjamin Banneker Elementary. She has also served as a speech/language pathologist, speech/language pathologist facilitator, and administrative intern for the St. Mary's County Public Schools. Ms. Fowler earned a Master of Arts degree in speech/language pathology from George Washington University and a Bachelor of Science degree in speech therapy from Louisiana State University.

The Board also named Mr. Alex Jaffurs supervisor of mathematics in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Mr. Jaffurs, who currently serves as the coordinator of intermediate mathematics for Calvert County Public Schools, is a 2005 Milken Educator Award winner and the 1997 St. Mary's County Teacher of the Year. His experience also includes serving as a mathematics department head, Advanced Placement (AP) teacher/consultant, and adjunct faculty member of the College of Southern Maryland. Mr. Jaffurs is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in secondary mathematics education and an undergraduate degree in mathematics, philosophy, and political science.

Additionally, the Board named Mr. Kevin Wright supervisor of social studies in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Mr. Wright returns to the school system from the Cape Henlopen School District in Lewes, DE, where he serves as a social studies lead teacher. He began his teaching career at Chopticon High School as a social studies and special education teacher before transitioning to the same positions in various Calvert County schools. Mr. Wright earned a Master's degree in special education from Bowie State University and a Bachelor's degree in social studies from Salisbury University.

These appointments become effective July 2, 2007.
