Mechanicsville Domestic Dispute Ends With Suicide

MECHANICSVILLE (June 11, 2007) - A Mechanicsville man is dead after apparently shooting himself to end a stand-off with St. Mary's County Police. The deceased was identified as George Robert Farrell, 33, of Mechanicsville. Sheriff's Office Deputies responded to the residence on Mechanicsville Road in response to a reported domestic assault.

Once on the scene, police made contact with the unnamed female victim. She described the verbal dispute and subsequent assault that took place between her and Farrell. She had visible signs of injury. Police say the woman told them that she was threatened with a handgun and that Farrell had access to at least two "long guns."

Deputies then made contact with Farrell. Police say he threatened to kill himself or have the deputies shoot him.

We do not currently know why police were unable to take Farrell into custody at that time.

Police say they established a perimeter around the residence and called in the Emergency Services Team and Negotiators. After hearing shots fired from inside the residence, police entered the residence and found Farrell deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

We do not know the exact date and time of the incident yet. Police say the incident lasted approximately 6 hours.

The investigation and scene was turned over to Detectives from the Bureau of Criminal Investigations.
