Calvert County Sheriff's Reports: Fatal Accident, Burglary


PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. - The Calvert County Sheriff's Office today released the following incident and arrest reports.

FATAL CRASH: On Sunday, September 23 at 4:45 p.m. members of the Calvert County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene of a fatal motor vehicle crash. A 2000 Ford van, driven by Velma Jean Nye, 65 of Chesapeake Beach, traveling eastbound on Chesapeake Beach Road/Md. Rt. 260 was struck by a 2006 Saturn sedan, driven by Kelly Marie Harris, 37 of Dunkirk. Harris' car was attempting to cross eastbound Md. Rt. 260 at Harrison Blvd. in Chesapeake Beach when she struck Nye's van, causing the van to roll several times before ejecting Nye.

Nye was pronounced dead at the scene. Harris was transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-incapacitating injuries and released. A four-year-old male passenger in Harris' vehicle suffered only minor injuries.

Charges against Harris are pending. The crash is being investigated by Cpl. Gary Shrawder.

BURGLARY: Members of the Calvert County Sheriff's Office responded to Papa John's Pizza located at 609 Solomons Island Road in Prince Frederick on September 21 in response to a burglary. An employee of the store advised that when she opened the store at 8:15 that morning, she discovered that unknown suspects had gained entry sometime overnight and had stolen an undisclosed amount of money. The investigation is being handled by the Calvert Investigative Team.
