Septuagenarian Murdered in Waldorf, Motive Unknown


LA PLATA, Md.—Charles County Sheriff’s officers are investigating the murder of Joseph Gilford Hickman, 71, of Waldorf. The murder occurred on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at a residence in the 3300 block of Ryon Court in Waldorf.

Hickman did not live at this residence.

Police say two males approached the residence from a nearby wooded area while Hickman was standing on the door step and engaged in a brief conversation. The suspects then fired multiple rounds from a handgun and fled the scene.

The suspects are described as black males wearing white sleeveless T-shirts. One suspect was wearing a dark-colored ski mask and at least one was armed.

Charles County detectives say that they do not believe the killing was random. The suspects appeared to target the residence. However, the motive is still unknown to police.
