St. Mary's Schools Will Dismiss One Day Early on June 6

LEONARDTOWN, Md. (May 08, 2008) - St. Mary's County Public Schools (SMCPS) announced today that classes for the current school year will end one day earlier on Friday, June 6. The last day was originally scheduled to be Monday, June 9.

The change comes as a result of a waiver issued by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). The waiver is being recommended by MSDE to all school systems in the state whose last day of school falls on a Monday.

The last day for teachers will remain as Tuesday, June 10.

June 4 will be a regular day of school with all AM and PM Prekindergarten students attending school on a normal schedule. June 4 will be the last day of school for PM Prekindergarten students.

June 5 will be an early dismissal day with AM Prekindergarten students attending school. PM Prekindergarten sessions will not be held on June 5.

June 6 will be an early dismissal day with AM Prekindergarten students attending school. PM Prekindergarten sessions will not be held on June 6.

The last two days of school (June 5 & 6) are half days.

SMCPS officials also cited energy conservation efforts as a rationale for the earlier dismissal.
