Three-year-old Drowns in Pool at Birthday Party

LA PLATA, Md. (June 27, 2011)—The Charles County Sheriff's Office reports that three-year-old Dyrrian McClain Sheff, of La Plata, drowned Saturday evening while swimming in a pool during a birthday party on Bensville Road in Pomfret at approximately 6:19 p.m.

Police investigators determined that the child was swimming in an in-ground pool with several relatives. As some of the people got out of the pool, they observed the child at the bottom of the deep end. He was brought to the surface where life-saving efforts were attempted. One of the guests—a registered nurse—initiated CPR. The boy was transported to Civista Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

There were no signs of foul play and at this point, it appears this was an accidental drowning, according to police.

Detective K. Klezia of the Criminal Investigations Division is continuing the investigation.
