Chas. Co. Career and Technology Students Compete in State Competition


LA PLATA, Md.—Twelve North Point High School students and four students from the Robert D. Stethem Educational Center advance to the national Skills USA competition after winning first place at the state event held April 20 at the Center of Applied Technology North, located in Anne Arundel County. They will represent Charles County Public Schools at the national event scheduled for June 25-28 in Kansas City, Mo.

The first-place winners are:

-- Kelly Martin, junior, North Point; and Jasmine Carmona, senior, North Point; American Spirit;

-- Seniors Kelly Dingess, Alyson Hughes, Tashara Mitchell and Douglas Shelton, Stethem, Broadcast News Production;

-- Kamryn Dudley, senior, North Point, Commercial Baking;

-- Kim McCloskey, senior, North Point, Early Childhood Education;

-- Kha-Ai Tran, senior, North Point, Medical Math; and

-- Alexander Corbin, Alphonso Lopez, Alyssa Moffat and Marie Sterba, seniors; Noah Gibson and Ashlynn Stanley, juniors; and Joel Rogers, sophomore; North Point, Quiz Bowl.

The following North Point students also placed at the state event:

-- Nick Cutter, senior, Cabinetmaking, second place;

-- Ashton Brown, junior, Criminal Justice, second place;

-- Ambrea Green, senior, Culinary Arts, second place;

-- Jessica Cruz, senior, Early Childhood Education, third place;

-- Quianita Miller, senior; and Sydney Patterson, Asia Williams and David Williams, juniors; Health Knowledge Bowl, second place;

-- Ja’Nya Banks, junior, Job Interview, second place;

-- LaRoz’ Leggett, senior, Medical Assistant, second place;

-- Deidre Miller, senior, Medical Math, third place;

-- Breanna Spangler, senior, Restaurant Service; second place

-- Dang-Quang Tran, junior, Related Technical Math, third place; and

-- Samuel Forinash, junior, Welding Sculpture, second place.

The Skills USA/VICA regional competition is a showcase event for career and technology students in the tri-county area. The students compete locally and continue through the state and national levels. The philosophy of the competition is to reward students for excellence, to involve industry in directly evaluating student performance and to train students for employer needs.
