John "Jay" W. Johnson, Jr., 69, passed away on July 25, 2022, as the result of complications from an earlier illness. He was affectionately known as "Jay" to his family, friends and those he met throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen P. Johnson and John W. Johnson, Sr. He is survived by his sisters: Judith Johnson, Sharon Mruk, Catherine Passas (James), Donna Mudd (Jeffrey). He is survived by his nephews and nieces: Steven Mruk (Erin), their children, John and Patrick, Christopher Passas (Isabel), their children, Emily and Ella, Jennifer Mudd, Erica Mudd Shaffer (Tim).

Jay had a lifelong interest and joy in working with fire and rescue services which spanned over 50 years. He graduated from Lackey High School in 1970 and later that year joined the Potomac Heights Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad.

In 1971, Jay enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and received crash/fire rescue training for aircraft, fire pump operations and other related training at Chanute AFB, Illinois; he was stationed in Loring AFB, Maine where he served, until he was discharged early for employment at the D.C. National Guard at Andrews AFB where he served for 4 years driving crash trucks and pumpers. Jay has spent 6 years working as a firefighter at the Consolidated Fire Department at the Washington Navy Yard from 1973 – 1979. After leaving US Government as a paid fire fighter, in 1981, Jay joined the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department where he was a Life Member and Past Engineer and remained a member in good standing until his death.

Jay was a great supporter of Veterans, annually donating funds to support the different organizations associated with the military. He was generous to all he knew were in need.
