Charles County Landfill Receives Peer Review

The Charles County Department of Public Facilities, Solid Waste Division, hosted a meeting on behalf of the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) on April 27 for solid waste managers, recycling coordinators, and MDE officials from throughout the State. Those who attended discussed a variety of topics relevant to the industry before conducting a peer inspection of the Charles County Landfill on Billingsley Road, which received excellent reviews during the exercise. MDE's Administrator of the Solid Waste Division, Ed Dexter, said, "The landfill definitely gets an 'A'."

The County's landfill was recently approved for a pilot program for leachate recirculation, an operating technique that allows for recirculating a portion of its wastewater through the landfill. This process allows for better decomposition of the waste as well as saving in leachate disposal.
