Car Strikes Charles County School Bus

On Aug. 31 at 3:47 p.m., a Toyota Tercel driven by Jerry Lee Franklin, 50, of Indian Head was traveling west in the 6300 block of Hawthorne Road and attempted to pass a Charles County Public Schools bus that was making a left turn from westbound Hawthorn Drive into a driveway. The Tercel struck the bus and became lodged underneath it.

The school bus was driven by Sterling Lee Proctor, 62, of Waldorf and was transporting 32 children from James Craik Elementary School. No one was injured. The crash occurred in a portion of the road designated as a passing zone. Franklin received a citation for negligent driving. Officer R. Taylor of the Traffic Operations Unit investigated.
