15 Y/O on Probation Carjacks His Counselor's Van

On Jan. 13 at 10:20 a.m., Charles County Sheriff's officers responded to the intersection of Leonardtown and Post Office roads in Waldorf for a report of an armed carjacking. Investigation revealed 15-year-old St. Mary's County boy was staying in a group home in Prince George's County during his probation for an assault. A counselor and the boy left in a minivan for the boy's school, Oxon Hill High School, but the counselor, a 37-year-old Lanham man, became lost. The boy said he knew directions but when they reached Post Office Road on Leonardtown Road, the counselor realized the boy was giving him the wrong directions. The counselor confronted the boy and the boy brandished a knife. The counselor fled the minivan on foot at the stoplight. The boy then fled in the minivan southbound on Leonardtown Road toward St. Mary's County.

Investigating officers conducted a search for the boy and the minivan but did not locate either. The van is described as a blue 2001 Pontiac Montana bearing Maryland tags M706387. The Sheriff's Office obtained a juvenile attachment through the Department of Juvenile Services for the boy's arrest. The victim was not injured. Officer D. Snyder is investigating.
