Charles County: Fleeing Police; Strong-Arm Robbery


FLEEING POLICE: On July 14 at 1:50 a.m., Officer J. Dodge observed a possibly intoxicated driver. He conducted a traffic stop on Crain Highway at Rosewick Road in La Plata. As the officer approached the vehicle the driver sped away. The accused, Justin Stoddert Matthews, 23, of Indian Head, continued south on Crain Highway at a high rate of speed and turned onto Hawthorne Road where he struck a road sign. He then stopped his vehicle in the 10 block of Hawthorne Road.

Matthews was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and numerous traffic violations. He is being held at the Charles County Detention Center pending an appearance before the district court commissioner. Neither the officers nor Matthews sustained any injuries.

STRONG-ARM ROBBERY: On July 13 at 2:06 p.m., Charles County Sheriff’s officers responded to Office Depot located at 3079 Waldorf Market Place in Waldorf for the report of a strong-arm robbery. The investigation revealed the victim, a 56-year-old male employee, had observed two males in the store who were acting suspicious. The employee used his personal cell phone camera to take a picture of one of the men. When the employee exited the store, the man who was photographed pushed him to the ground and took his cell phone. He removed the flip portion of the phone, dropped it on the ground, kept the lower portion and fled the scene in a black full-size Ford pick-up truck. The truck had Maryland handicapped tags with a partial number 569.

The suspect was described as a black male, is 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 260 pounds. He was wearing a gray shirt and dark pants. Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to contact the Charles County Sheriff’s Office at 301-932-7777. Officer A. St. Germain is investigating.
