Charles County Re-Opens Rental Allowance Program

The Charles County Commissioners announced today that the Charles County Department of Community Services Housing and Community Development Division will re-open the Rental Allowance Program (RAP) effective August 11, 2006. Applications will be accepted through September 11, 2006.

The Department of Community Services (DCS) serves as the local administrative agency for the RAP certificate program. The program is a State-funded rental assistance program for low-income people who are homeless or who have an emergency housing need. Priority is given to individuals who are likely to become, or remain, self-sufficient with the assistance. The RAP program provides a fixed monthly payment for up to 12 months.

Applications are available at the DCS office at 101 Catalpa Drive, Suite 100, La Plata, or you may download an application from http://www.charlescounty.org/cs/housing/rap. Applications are accepted during normal working hours. Individuals seeking assistance must possess necessary proof of emergency need; i.e., potential eviction notice; court/sheriff eviction notice; or proof of homelessness from shelter, Department of Social Services, Red Cross, or church intervention.

Walk-in appointments are only accepted on Tuesdays and Thursdays, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Walk-ins must be in possession of all family birth certificates, social security cards, income verification, and proof of emergency need. All other applications will receive a scheduled appointment.

For more information, you can contact the Department of Community Services from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday, at 301-934-0112 or 301-870-3388, extension 5112.
