Woman's Story About Vehicle Accident Doesn't Add Up

LEONARDTOWN, MD—On Sunday, October 8, 2006 at 7:30 am, the Maryland State Police (MSP) Leonardtown Barrack received a call from St. Mary’s Hospital advising that a female had arrived at the hospital with injuries she stated occurred from an accident. She was identified as Joyce Ann Fletcher, 26, of District Heights. Ms. Fletcher advised she had been driving a Toyota but could not advise where the accident occurred.

A hospital security guard noted that he remembered seeing a Toyota on the side of the road in the area of Route 5 and Sunnyside in Loveville. TFC Linger responded to Route 5 and Sunnyside and located the Toyota. The vehicle had been driven off the road, struck a tree, and then came to rest.

An MVA check indicated Ms. Fletcher was not the vehicle's owner. The owner was contacted. He advised that he lent Ms. Fletcher the vehicle. He requested the vehicle back several times. However, Ms. Fletcher refused to return it.

A search of the vehicle revealed a bag of marijuana in the driver’s side door pocket.

TFC Van Bennekum responded to the hospital and made contact with Ms. Fletcher. When Ms. Fletcher was released from the hospital she was arrested and taken to the detention center. She was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of CDS paraphernalia, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and several traffic citations. She was held pending a bond review.
