Local Youths Charged In Playground Fire

GREAT MILLS, Md. (October 19, 2007) — Deputy State Fire Marshals have charged two local youths with malicious burning, 2nd degree, in connection with the playground fire at the Hickory Hill Community Association located at 22030 Athlone Drive in Great Mills, Md.

The October 8, 2007 fire caused an estimated $300.00 damage to the playground equipment. Firefighters from the Bay District Fire Company responded to the 4:40 p.m. fire and were able to quickly extinguish the flames.

The youths, an 11 year old boy and the other a 14 year old boy, were identified through witnesses and from surveillance cameras that were located on the property.

The boys were released to the custody of their parents and referred to the Department of Juvenile Services for further action. The motive appears to have been horseplay and juvenile mischief.
